Free Prior and Informed Consent(FPIC) is the rights of Indigenous Peoples grounded in the fundamental rights of self-determination; the right to freely pursue economic, social, and cultural development; and individual human rights. Backing FPIC are the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the International Labor Organization Convention 169, representing the most powerful and comprehensive international instruments recognizing the rights of Indigenous Peoples. From First Peoples Worldwide, “The due diligence and process necessary when obtaining free, prior and informed consent upholds Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination and their sovereignty, respects and protects Indigenous lands and resources, reduces or eliminates risk of physical harm and material loss, and facilitates equitable partnerships throughout the duration of a project lifecycle and long afterwards.”
This session will look at; What exactly is FPIC? What do funders need to know about operationalizing FPIC and engaging in human rights due diligence to consider potential impacts on Indigenous land, territories, resources, health and safety, cultural heritage, and communities, etc.? This side event will detail FPIC basics and will feature a panel of Indigenous leaders to discuss the opportunities and challenges around supporting FPIC processes.
